Cheese and spinach twists

This is a delicious savoury snack for children. Children can help out by spreading ingredients out on a ready made, rolled out puff pastry and sprinkling seeds. They’ll also enjoy cutting them into strips and rolling them into twisty shapes.

You can easily make variations, such as cheese and pesto twists. For an extra kick, you may add a pinch of cayenne pepper. You’d be surprised how much children love spicy food.

Ingredients

  • A sheet of ready made puff pastry sheet (thawed at room temperature)
  • Coarsely grated cheese (e.g. cheddar, parmesan, feta, or a mix)
  • A couple handfuls of fresh spinach
  • Sun dried tomatoes coarsely chopped
  • Finely chopped garlic
  • Seeds e.g. linseeds, sesame seeds etc.

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan oven. Line oven tray with baking paper.
  2. Combine grated cheddar cheese and parmesan cheese in small bowl.
  3. Place spinach in a pan and cook on the hob for a few minutes. Squeeze out excess water from spinach, and then roughly chop the spinach.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry sheet.
  5. Spread the chopped spinach, garlic and sun dried tomatoes over one half of the puff pastry; sprinkle with cheese and seeds over the top.
  6. Place the other half of puff pastry on top, and gently press down on the puff pastry, pinching around the edges to seal.
  7. Cut pastry stack into strips of around 2cm wide and then twist each strips.
  8. Place strips on baking trays; bake about 15 minutes or until browned and crisp.
